The Latest on Hemp in Indiana and Hawaii

Hemp is a crop that is heavily scrutinized and often regulated too harshly. While the U.S. Farm Bill in 2018 made it legal on the federal level, states have still tried to battle it and make it harder to produce and sell this plant that can produce tens of thousands of products. Lately, Indiana and Hawaii have taken on the crop, so let’s see what they have to say about it.
Smokable Hemp Descriminalized in Indiana
In 2019, Indiana criminalized smokable hemp, while the state legalized the production of commercial hemp. However, in July 2020, a federal appeals court overturned the law after a group of hemp sellers sued. They used the Farm Bill as a basis, and an appeal court agreed and said the injunction was too broad. The case was ordered back to the lower court. Indiana hemp lovers can breathe a sigh of relief for now.
Hawaiian Bill Legalizes Industrial Hemp
Also, in July 2020, Hawaii’s House of Representatives passed a bill that legalized the “growing, processing, and sale of industrial hemp” in the state, according to KHON2. It had previously passed the Senate unanimously. Now, the bill will head to the desk of Governor David Ige. Only last year, Governor Ige vetoed a hemp bill that he thought was “unenforceable.” However, the current bill was worked on in conjunction with Ige’s administration to make sure it passed.
