You love CBD, but do you know how manufacturers extract it? Do you know how it gets into your favorite products? Rest assured that we have you covered, and we will explain the process in detail. We believe in CBD lovers having as much information as possible about a product they take regularly. You’ll also gain more appreciation for the hard work that goes into all those tinctures, gummies, and other items you can’t get enough of in your everyday life.
Two Common Methods
Producers use a couple of standard practices to remove CBD from the hemp plant. Manufacturers often use CO2 or ethanol extraction. Either method effectively produces high-quality CBD. Let’s break down each.
CO2
The CO2 method is also known as supercritical CO2 extraction. The process refers to the temperature at which carbon dioxide acts as both a liquid and gas—88 degrees F. The manufacturer places the plant material in a special carbon dioxide chamber. The terpenes and trichomes, critical parts of the plant, dissolve into the CO2.
The resulting product is pure CBD oil. One advantage that many people enjoy is that this method preserves chlorophyll. This method also preserves other components like terpenes, contributing to the “entourage effect.”
Ethanol
With ethanol, the plant material is heated to the appropriate temperature to remove carbon atoms. As a result, a green powder remains, which is then soaked in ethanol. Next, the mixture is filtered to separate the liquid from the plant material. After a while, the ethanol evaporates to leave quality CBD. One main advantage is that this process maintains the plant’s natural flavonoids and terpenes, giving the CBD a more robust and natural taste.
